Chapter 24 - CELESTINE’S DEATH
Celestine died at seventy-two.
Cancer.
No mystery.
No revenge.
No fire.
Her attorney contacted Poppy because Celestine left one personal item.
Not money.
Not recordings.
A sealed envelope containing a photograph of Mara and Celestine at nineteen.
College.
Laughing.
Arms around each other.
Poppy almost refused.
Then took it.
She stared for a long time.
“They looked happy.”
“Yes.”
“Were they?”
“In that moment probably.”
She kept the photograph.
Not as absolution.
History.
Celestine’s estate paid no new restitution because prior obligations were completed.
Lawful assets went to her family.
No last-minute fortune for Poppy.
No secret confession.
The criminal record already existed.
Poppy attended no funeral.
I did not either.
Avery did.
That surprised me.
She said:
