Chapter 20 - THE RECORDING BECOMES EVIDENCE, NOT INHERITANCE
By the time Poppy was twenty-five, the legal retention periods had passed except for archived court exhibits.
The original USB was returned to Mara’s estate years earlier.
My copy remained in Daniel’s vault.
He was retiring.
“What do you want done with it?”
I asked Poppy.
She had standing in the estate now.
She thought.
“Do courts have the recordings?”
“Yes.”
“Authenticated copies?”
“Yes.”
“Do we need ours?”
“No legal need.”
“Then destroy it.”
I agreed.
Not the data because we feared truth.
Because truth no longer needed to live in our drawer.
Daniel arranged secure destruction.
Certificate.
Boring.
Excellent.
Poppy asked if she could keep one thing first.
A photo.
Mara sitting on the floor with toddler Poppy and the unfinished rag doll.
Ordinary.
We printed it.
No audio.
No threats.
No finance.
Mara as mother.
Not witness.
That mattered.
The doll itself was nearly falling apart by then.
Poppy asked Janice Wood’s daughter—Janice had retired—to stabilize it again.
New stitches.
No replacement.
At twenty-five Poppy still owned Dolly.
Did she sleep with it?
“No.”
She claimed.
I did not investigate.
Then news came.
Celestine was eligible for parole review.
Not automatic release.
Review.
Poppy asked whether she needed to attend.
“No.”
“Can I?”
“Yes.”
“Should I?”
“That’s your choice.”
She hated that answer.
Adult children eventually discover parents cannot solve choice without stealing it.
Poppy submitted a written statement instead.
I do not oppose lawful consideration of rehabilitation. I ask that any release conditions preserve permanent no-contact with me.
That was mature.
I did not help write it.
Much.
She caught my edits.
“Dad.”
“Comma.”
“No.”
Fine.
Celestine was released under supervision later.
No contact.
No media circus.
She worked in bookkeeping? Could financial fraud restrictions affect. She was barred from fiduciary roles for some period and found administrative work outside financial control.
The world did not end because prison ended.
