Chapter 22 - MARA WASN’T PERFECT
Poppy found Mara’s journals at thirty.
Not secret evidence.
Personal journals stored with family things.
I had never read all of them.
Privacy after death is complicated.
Poppy asked if she could.
They were part of Mara’s personal effects intended eventually for her.
“Yes.”
She read.
Mara was funny.
Impatient.
Jealous sometimes.
She complained about me.
A lot.
Poppy found that delightful.
Mara wrote:
Gage loads dishwasher like a raccoon with a grudge.
Unfair.
Mostly.
Then harder entries.
Mara knew Celestine had boundary problems long before the fraud.
She ignored some because friendship mattered.
She also knew Poppy was anxious around Celestine.
Did not fully investigate.
Parents miss things.
Then the doll.
Mara wrote:
I hid backup drive in Pop’s ugly queen. Terrible place because it makes her part of this. Moving it tomorrow.
She died the next morning.
That entry changed Poppy.
“Mom knew it was wrong.”
“Yes.”
“She was going to move it.”
“Yes.”
Poppy cried.
Not because Mara became perfect.
Because Mara had seen the problem too late and intended to correct it.
Human.
Poppy said:
“I spent years thinking Mom trusted me with secret mission.”
“She trusted the doll as hiding place.”
“That’s less cool.”
“Much healthier.”
She laughed.
Then:
“I’m glad.”
So was I.
We stopped telling the story as:
Mara entrusted Poppy with evidence.
No.
Mara hid evidence in a child’s toy during fear.
She told Poppy to protect the toy.
Then died before she could remove the burden.
