Chapter 26 - THE KEEPSAKE BOX

At thirty-one, Eira became a mother.

A daughter.

I held the baby only after Eira handed her to me.

Claire laughed at how formal I was.

I had learned.

Years later, Eira opened the keepsake box with her daughter.

Not all at once.

No trauma lecture.

A photograph.

A scarf.

The silver hair clip.

The repaired locket.

Her daughter asked:

“Who is she?”

“My mom.”

“But Grandma Claire?”

“Grandma Claire is Dad’s wife. This is my first mom, who died when I was little.”

Children tolerate complexity better than adults who benefit from simplification.

Then:

“Did you know her?”

“A little.”

“Do you miss her?”

“Sometimes.”

“Can you miss someone you don’t remember?”

Eira looked at me.

I stayed out of it.

Her answer:

“Yes. Sometimes you miss the place they were supposed to have.”

Perfect.

No one removed the box.

No one required it to stay open.

Afterward Eira put it back in the cabinet.
