Chapter 25 - THE HOUSE BECOMES EIRA’S DECISION

At twenty-five, Eira chose.

Keep the house in trust?

Sell?

Transfer subject to tax and estate advice?

She decided to keep trust ownership for another ten years and rent part of the property while I moved with Claire to a smaller home nearby.

“Are you sure?” I asked.

“Dad.”

“I know.”

“You have asked twelve times.”

“It’s a major decision.”

“It is my decision.”

There.

I smiled.

“Yes.”

The sentence I once failed to understand with Ainsley.

My decision.

Eira renovated carefully.

Not a memorial museum.

Not erasure.

She kept one original room mostly intact because she liked the woodwork.

Turned another into a studio.

Stored her mother’s belongings properly.

Used some.

Sold a few items herself.

That surprised me.

“You’re selling the tea service?”

“I hate tea service.”

“Your mother—”

She looked at me.

I stopped.

Her property.

Her mother had wanted options, not worship.

Eira sold it.

Used part of proceeds for graduate school.

Kept the locket.

May you like

Again:

No metaphor.
