Chapter 19 - THE APPEAL

Ainsley appealed one financial conviction.
Her attorney argued the jury—before the plea? Can't appeal plea normally. Better financial case perhaps conviction after trial. Need continuity fix. Let's say she appealed a restitution classification/order, not conviction. But ch13 said pled guilty. She can appeal restitution order in limited circumstances. We'll make that.
Ainsley challenged part of the restitution order.
Not guilt.
She argued certain recovery costs were outside the statute.
The appellate court agreed partly.
Restitution reduced.
Headline:
AINSLEY WINS APPEAL IN WEXLEY HEIRLOOM CASE.
Eira was eleven.
She saw it online.
“Did she win everything?”
“No.”
“Then why say win?”
“Because headlines are bad at nuance.”
“What changed?”
“She did not have to pay some legal costs the court decided were calculated incorrectly.”
“Does she still have to pay for bracelet?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
I explained that courts correcting errors was not betrayal.
She hated that.
Then understood.
Accuracy must apply to people we dislike too.
That lesson became important later when she studied law.
Not because of trauma.

She liked arguing.
There is a difference.
