Chapter 11 - THE BRACELET
We found the bracelet.
Not through a dramatic raid.
Merritt Estate records.
The buyer was a collector in Connecticut.
She had purchased it legally through consignment.
She had no idea the seller lacked authority.
That mattered.
Could we simply take it back?
No.
The legal question involved title, good-faith purchase rules, consignment law, and the fact the item belonged to a minor.
Lawyers negotiated.
The buyer was sympathetic.
She agreed to return it for:
Purchase price reimbursement.
Documented expenses.
Merritt waived part of its fees because its sale-authorization review had failed to verify ownership adequately.
Ainsley’s frozen funds covered most of the repurchase.
No innocent buyer financially destroyed.
No heroic seizure.
The earrings were harder.
Resold once.
Eventually recovered through civil settlement eight months later.
Eira did not know the process.
She did not need to.
The bracelet went into trustee custody, not her toy box.
At four, valuable sapphire jewelry was not developmentally useful.
The locket was different.
The estate instructions allowed it when she began asking.
A jeweler repaired the clasp.
Replaced the heat? There was no heat. Wrong story.
Repaired a small scratch.
Inserted a tiny photograph of Eira’s mother on one side.
Eira as a baby on the other.
When I gave it to her, I said:
“This belonged to Mommy. She wanted you to have it when you started asking about her.”
Eira stared.
“She knew?”
“She knew you might want it.”
“Did Mommy know she die?”
My chest tightened.
“No.”
Important.
No prophetic dead mother.
“She made plans because grown-ups make plans.”
Eira nodded.
Then:
“Can wear?”
“Yes.”
Maya had advised:
Let the locket be ordinary.
Not sacred.
If Eira loses it one day, do not turn it into catastrophe.
That terrified me.
Still correct.
Eira wore it to preschool.
Came home with paint on the chain.
I almost had a heart attack.
Then remembered:
