Chapter 24 - THE TRIAL TABLE

The trial began fourteen months after the estate dinner.

Victoria, Owen, and Ross were tried together on the Alpha conspiracy and evidence crimes. Victoria also faced assault, medical coercion, identity theft, and witness tampering.

The judge separated some attempted-murder evidence against Owen to prevent unfair prejudice.

Richard testified for four days.

He explained Alpha’s origins, the illegal shipments, Owen’s leaks, my false profile, and the acquisition plan.

Victoria’s attorney attacked his plea agreement.

“You are sacrificing your sister to reduce your sentence.”

“I am describing what we did.”

“You created Alpha.”

“I approved it and expanded it. Owen designed the security structure. Victoria managed the identity channels.”

“Convenient division.”

“Criminal work still has departments.”

The answer sounded like Richard.

Cold.

Precise.

True enough to be dangerous.

He admitted approaching me because of Dad.

He admitted loving me.

He admitted continuing the operation after that love became real.

The prosecution did not present affection as mitigation.

Helen testified about the kitchen meeting and the first slap.

Caleb authenticated his audio and explained the payment to his studio.

He admitted accepting the money before cooperating.

Agent Mercer described the independent evidence chain without relying on excluded Code Black files.

Engineers explained the counterfeit equipment.

Customs officials explained export restrictions.

Hospital representatives described recalls.

No patient death had been conclusively tied to Alpha devices. Several dangerous failures had occurred.

The government did not exaggerate.

Dad testified next.

Victoria’s attorney portrayed him as a director who used his daughter’s marriage to target a disliked family.

Dad admitted every conflict.

“I suspected Richard’s approach may not have been accidental.”

“And you allowed your daughter to marry him.”

“She did not require my permission.”

“You kept investigating.”

“Yes.”

“You activated Code Black after seeing her injured.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted revenge.”

“I wanted the network purge stopped and my daughter protected. Those motives existed at the same time.”

The honesty weakened the clean heroic story.

It strengthened credibility.

When I testified, Victoria stared at me.

Her attorney asked why I had not left Richard after earlier controlling behavior.

“Because I interpreted control as concern.”

“Did you enjoy the Carrington lifestyle?”

“Yes.”

“Did Alpha money pay your expenses?”

“Some expenses, without my knowledge.”

“You benefited.”

“Yes.”

“Yet you want this jury to believe you knew nothing.”

“I want the jury to evaluate documents, recordings, and actions. My comfort does not become informed agreement.”

He played the video of Dad escorting me to the SUV.

“You appeared willing to leave with a powerful federal director.”

“He was my father.”

“You chose his side.”

“Victoria chose violence before I knew there were sides.”

The jury heard my account of the slap, shove, documents, biometric pad, and medical proxy.

I did not call Victoria a monster.

I described what she did.

After court, Richard passed me under guard.

He looked older.

“I am sorry,” he said.

Maya stepped between us.

I answered anyway.

“Tell the truth tomorrow.”

He did.

The prosecution then played the newly recovered seven minutes.

Victoria’s voice filled the courtroom.

“Elena has one final chance.”

Richard said:

“If she refuses, postpone.”

Owen answered:

“The inspection starts Monday.”

Victoria asked:

“Company or wife?”

Richard remained silent for six seconds.

Then:

“Company.”

The recording continued.

Footsteps.

My voice entering the room.

Paper sliding across the table.

May you like

And Victoria whispering to Richard:

“Then let me teach her what her place costs.”
