Chapter 16 - THE DRIVE BENEATH THE ESTATE

Before the convoy moved, Dana ordered a complete reexamination of Carrington estate plans.

Helen Ward, the catering manager, contacted Maya again.

Her son’s theft accusation had been dismissed after hotel footage proved he was elsewhere.

She was ready to speak.

Helen had worked at the estate for sixteen years.

She knew a service tunnel ran from the wine cellar to an old carriage building beyond the gates.

Richard claimed the tunnel had been sealed.

It had not.

Agents found recent tire marks and power cables inside.

A concealed room beneath the carriage floor housed an Alpha relay station.

The equipment had been stripped, but dust outlines showed the size of missing servers.

Helen remembered Owen visiting the tunnel during private dinners.

He signed the guest book under another name.

She also remembered the night I was assaulted.

Victoria entered the tunnel thirty minutes before dinner carrying the shattered vase.

Owen came out without it.

Richard waited near the cellar door.

All three had coordinated.

Inside a drain, agents found a waterproof data capsule.

It contained partial shipping records and audio from the estate.

The capsule was not the master drive.

It had been left as insurance by someone inside the conspiracy.

One file showed Marcus Vance approving an emergency vendor waiver four years earlier.

The waiver allowed Carrington Meridian to move restricted navigation units during a hurricane after a government warehouse lost power.

The shipment was legitimate.

Owen later copied its authorization code and reused it inside Alpha.

Richard’s defense announced that Director Vance created the original pathway.

The statement was misleading.

It was not entirely false.

Dad had approved a system with weak expiration controls.

His office failed to ensure the emergency credentials died after the crisis.

Alpha grew from that opening.

At the inspector-general hearing, Dad admitted the oversight.

He could have blamed technical staff.

He did not.

“I treated the waiver as temporary because the emergency was temporary,” he said. “The system did not understand intention. It understood access.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Marriage had worked the same way.

Richard treated my love as permanent authorization.

My father treated loyalty as immunity from scrutiny.

I treated signatures as routine because the person holding the paper felt familiar.

Systems recorded permission long after trust became unsafe.

The capsule also contained one intact Alpha ledger page.

It linked container serials to a warehouse called Northpoint Twelve.

Northpoint stored neonatal and emergency-care equipment under a federal contract.

The counterfeit substitutions might already have reached hospitals.

Dana obtained an immediate search warrant.

At Northpoint, inspectors found boxes with correct labels and altered internal devices.

No confirmed patient harm had been identified yet.

A recall began.

The case moved beyond espionage and money.

People might have depended on equipment changed through Alpha.

Then a serial-number report arrived from St. Catherine Medical Center.

One altered fetal monitor had been used the night I arrived after Victoria shoved me.

The machine that measured my baby’s heartbeat came through the network Richard helped corrupt.
