Chapter 18 - THE BROKEN CHAIN

Security officers found the cloned badge outside Dad’s building.

No intruder entered.

A small transmitter had been attached beneath his assigned vehicle.

It broadcast the vehicle’s position.

The device matched components sold by Caleb Ross’s freight-security company.

Ross and Owen remained missing.

Dana canceled the evidence convoy and changed transport plans.

Defense attorneys accused prosecutors of inventing threats to excuse gaps in the case.

They filed motions to suppress evidence seized during Code Black.

The judge excluded several early server images because the government failed to separate Dad’s emergency authority from the assault investigation quickly enough.

The ruling did not erase Alpha.

It removed convenient proof.

The prosecution rebuilt through independent sources:

Bank transfers.

Customs records.

Hospital equipment.

Caleb’s audio.

Helen’s testimony.

Owen’s consulting payments.

The tunnel capsule.

Richard’s messages.

Evidence became slower and stronger.

My deposition lasted two days.

Victoria’s attorney questioned every disagreement in my marriage.

Why had I stayed after Richard opened my mail?

Why had I allowed him to manage investments?

Why did I attend the estate dinner after feeling pressured?

Why had I not told police about earlier insults?

The questions aimed to make delayed recognition look like consent.

I answered without creating a perfect victim.

“I loved him.”

“I minimized warning signs.”

“I wanted the marriage to work.”

“I did not authorize fraud or violence.”

During the second day, contractions began.

I tried to continue.

Maya stopped the deposition.

At St. Catherine, Dr. Miles confirmed preterm labor at thirty-four weeks.

Medication slowed the contractions temporarily. Steroids were given to support the baby’s lungs in case delivery occurred.

I remained hospitalized.

Richard petitioned for access, citing his parental rights and concern for Grace.

The court allowed him medical updates through a neutral channel, not physical entry.

He filed a photograph of the nursery he had prepared.

A pale room.

A wooden cradle.

A framed family crest.

The image hurt because part of me remembered choosing the wallpaper.

Love and danger had occupied the same rooms.

Dana visited after the contractions eased.

“We found Caleb Ross.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

He had crossed into another state under a false identity and entered a private clinic for a gunshot wound.

He claimed Owen shot him after a dispute over the master drive.

Ross offered the drive’s location for immunity.

Dana refused immunity but agreed to hear a proffer.

Ross said the master drive was hidden inside an evidence vehicle already under federal control.

Owen placed it there so he could steal the convoy and make the loss appear external.

The vehicle was parked beneath the federal laboratory.

Agents searched it.

The drive sat inside a false battery housing.

Its seals were intact.

The chain of custody began from that recovery, not Code Black.

The master Alpha ledger had finally been found.

Before technicians could open it, the hospital monitor beside me accelerated.

Grace’s heart rate dropped.

Dr. Miles ordered an emergency delivery.
