Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED ON PURPOSE
Clara was alive.
Her recorder contained a second file instructing us not to search until she contacted federal investigators. She feared criminal exposure for collecting information inside my home and wanted counsel before returning.
She had not been abducted.
She had disappeared because Victoria’s security chief told her she would be blamed for every forged report.
Her fear was credible.
Her actions had still harmed me.
Through an attorney, Clara supplied copies of surveillance logs, nanny reports, and payment records.
The live feed at Lena’s apartment came from a camera hidden inside a baby monitor Ethan delivered after the reception.
I had plugged it in myself.
Police recovered the device.
Its normal camera connected to the manufacturer’s app.
A second concealed transmitter connected to Meridian.
That evidence supported illegal-surveillance charges.
Ethan claimed he did not know the monitor had been modified.
Messages showed Victoria’s assistant gave it to him sealed.
Clara said Ethan knew there would be monitoring but believed it would capture only “unsafe behavior.”
He had agreed to watch me without consent because he expected evidence.
He found none.
So the reports became more dramatic.
Rachel asked Clara about the floral device.
“It transmitted to Meridian.”
“What?”
“Not just video. It tagged clips in real time.”
“Who controlled the tags?”
“Victoria’s table had a small remote.”
The red blink meant the system had marked my statement for immediate extraction.
They had built an event around producing a usable threat.
Clara still did not know the full reason.
She knew only the deadline.
Harper’s succession date was forty days after birth.
Nine days remained.
Victoria filed another emergency motion.
She asked the court to place Harper temporarily with Ethan at the Vance estate, arguing that media attention and my impulsive conduct created danger.
The judge refused the estate placement.
She authorized overnight time with Ethan at a neutral residence after confirming security and childcare arrangements.
I opposed it.
The evaluator said my opposition was understandable but increasingly absolute.
“Harper has two parents. The court needs evidence about Ethan’s direct risk, not only Victoria’s influence.”
The first overnight occurred at a rented townhouse.
Ethan returned Harper on time.
She was safe.
Inside the diaper bag, I found a folded red ribbon.
No note.
Ethan claimed he had never seen it.
The ribbon was not a threat by itself.
