Chapter 2 - THE VERSION THEY RELEASED

I reached my car before Ethan caught me.
“You cannot drive like this.”
“Watch me.”
“Maya, she made a stupid joke.”
“She brought a dog collar toward our daughter.”
“She wasn’t going to touch Harper.”
“You knew what was in the box.”
His silence confirmed it.
I locked Harper’s carrier into the back seat.
“What was inside the flowers?”
“Venue equipment.”
“Then why tell me not to touch it?”
He glanced toward the reception doors.
“Come home. We’ll talk privately.”
“You had a room full of chances to speak.”
I drove to my friend Lena’s apartment.
She was a neonatal nurse and checked Harper before allowing me to sit down. The baby had cried from noise and tension but showed no sign of injury.
At midnight, a video appeared online.
It began with me standing beside the flowers.
Victoria’s chain was outside the frame.
The laughter was gone.
The clip showed only my face and my words:
Tomorrow, that red leash will be fastened around your neck.
The caption read:
POSTPARTUM WIFE THREATENS GRANDMOTHER AT FAMILY CHRISTENING.
By morning, the clip had spread through local society pages.
Ethan sent one message.
Do not respond publicly.
Victoria’s attorney sent another.
You are instructed to preserve all evidence regarding threats made against Mrs. Vance.
Lena watched the clip twice.
“They cut the beginning.”
“They planned the ending.”
A knock sounded.
Two police officers stood outside with a county child-welfare investigator.
Victoria had reported that I was experiencing postpartum delusions and had threatened to harm her while holding Harper.
I let them inside.
The investigator asked whether I had thoughts of hurting myself or my baby.
“No.”
“Are you receiving postpartum treatment?”
“I called my obstetrician once because I couldn’t sleep.”
“Medication?”
“None.”
She examined Harper’s sleeping area, formula supplies, diapers, and medical records. Lena confirmed I had been calm since arriving.
The investigator did not remove my child.
Before leaving, she handed me a copy of Victoria’s statement.
Attached was an email supposedly written by me three days earlier.
I do not trust myself when Harper cries. Sometimes I imagine doing something terrible.
The message had been sent from my account.
I had never written it.

Someone was not merely editing the reception.
Someone had entered my private life before it began.
