Chapter 4 - THE DOCTOR WHO NEVER EXAMINED ME
At the custody hearing, Victoria’s attorney produced a letter from Dr. Martin Kell.
He described me as showing signs of postpartum paranoia and impaired judgment.
I had never met him.
He was the Vance family psychiatrist.
His letter claimed Ethan had consulted him about my behavior and that immediate separation from “stressful maternal triggers” could be medically appropriate.
My obstetrician testified by phone.
“I have not diagnosed Maya with postpartum psychosis. She reported fatigue and anxiety consistent with caring for a newborn. She has never expressed intent to harm Harper.”
The judge ordered an independent evaluation.
She did not remove Harper.
She required supervised exchanges and prohibited either family from posting further video.
Outside court, Victoria approached me wearing red.
“No cameras today?” I asked.
“You should be grateful we are trying to help.”
“You gave your psychiatrist my medical history.”
“Ethan was concerned.”
“You were concerned I would not obey.”
Her smile returned.
“Those are often the same thing.”
I made my first serious mistake.
I stepped closer.
“If you come near my child again, I will destroy everything you care about.”
Rachel pulled me back.
Victoria’s driver recorded the sentence from the curb.
By evening, another shortened clip appeared through an anonymous account.
The judge warned both sides that public manipulation would affect credibility.
Victoria denied involvement.
Ethan said he could not control strangers.
The independent evaluator interviewed me for three hours. I told her about sleeplessness, resentment, the forged email, and the reception.
I also admitted the threats I had made.
“I wanted Victoria afraid.”
“Do you intend to hurt her?”
“No.”
“Do you intend to prevent Ethan from parenting?”
“I don’t know whether he is parenting or managing me for his mother.”
The evaluator wrote without reaction.
Before I left, she asked one unusual question.
“Did anyone discuss Harper’s legal residence with you before the birth?”
“No.”
“Her beneficial ownership?”
“What does that mean?”
She closed her notebook.
“That answer is outside my assignment.”
Rachel later learned Dr. Kell had received a large payment from the Vance Family Office shortly before writing his letter.
The invoice did not say psychiatric consultation.
