Chapter 8 - THE PARTY SCHEDULE
Police traced Thomas’s call to a prepaid phone purchased by his former driver.
The driver claimed he bought it as a favor without knowing why.
Detective Keene documented the connection but did not call it proof of the threat’s speaker until voice analysis was completed.
The wedding planner surrendered Vanessa’s event files.
The schedule contained unusual notes:
4:08 — champagne pop near east patio.
4:10 — family intervention.
4:20 — private signing.
4:30 — foundation announcement.
There was no ordinary reason to build Ethan’s sensory distress into the program.
Vanessa’s attorney claimed the champagne location was accidental.
Emails showed she moved it after learning where Ethan planned to sit.
The “foundation announcement” concerned a new residential program.
Promotional material described Ethan as its first participant.
I had never agreed to place him there.
The program existed only on paper.
Its proposed annual cost was 320,000 dollars, payable from Ethan’s trust to the Hale Ability Foundation.
The signing would have transferred him financially and legally into a service the family controlled.
Rebecca believed Plan A was coercion.
Overwhelm Ethan.
Make me appear unable to manage him.
Pressure me to sign.
The pool assault may have begun when Ethan’s tablet threatened the plan.
Still, Thomas’s restraint and words went beyond coercion.
Mia remembered something.
Before the champagne bottle opened, Vanessa asked whether Ethan had learned to swim.
Mia answered no.
Vanessa said, “That’s irresponsible.”
Ten minutes later, she pushed him into the deepest section.
Knowledge mattered.
The tablet’s memory chip produced one recovered image.
A photograph taken accidentally from Thomas’s study floor.
Thomas and Vanessa stood near the desk.
Between them lay the trust amendment and a chart titled:
TERMINATION DISTRIBUTION.
Only the heading was readable.
The rest remained blurred.
Then the pool-system company supplied remote logs.
Thomas disabled the alarm.
Vanessa tested the deep-end gate.
The actions occurred eleven minutes apart.
The evidence still did not reveal whether they had planned Ethan’s death before the party or seized the opportunity after he recorded them.
The recovered audio would decide that.
Digital specialists found a longer fragment.
Thomas’s voice said:
“If the boy reaches the review date, everything opens.”
Vanessa answered:
“Then Laura signs today.”
