Chapter 7 - THE REMAINDER BENEFICIARY
The former officer was named Julian Ross.
He had managed my mother’s trust account until Thomas demanded his removal.
Julian met us with counsel present.
Helen’s trust directed unused assets after Ethan’s death to the Hale Ability Foundation.
At the time she signed, the foundation was small and respected. My mother believed it would support other autistic children.
After her death, Thomas became board chair.
Vanessa became executive director.
The remainder clause did not prove they wanted Ethan dead.
It created a financial interest that should have been independently disclosed.
The upcoming corporate review would remove Thomas’s investment authority and examine Bright Path.
If Ethan died first, the trust would terminate.
The foundation would receive the remaining balance after final expenses.
Thomas and Vanessa controlled the foundation.
Julian had warned Thomas that the arrangement created a conflict.
Thomas removed him.
Rebecca sought an immediate freeze.
The court suspended Thomas as co-trustee and appointed a temporary corporate fiduciary.
The foundation’s accounts were preserved.
Thomas counterattacked through child services.
He produced therapy notes describing Ethan’s elopement risk, water fixation, and aggressive episodes.
Some reports were genuine.
Others contained phrases his real therapist had never written.
A forged report claimed I repeatedly ignored recommendations for residential placement.
The signature belonged to Ethan’s former therapist, Dr. Natalie Cho.
Natalie denied signing it.
She had also never recommended removing Ethan from my home.
Before she could provide a formal affidavit, someone emailed her employer accusing her of falsifying insurance claims.
The accusation was unsupported.
It frightened her.
Thomas understood how to make honest witnesses defend themselves.
Then Detective Keene found the missing tablet.
A landscaping worker had discovered it inside a drainage grate beyond Thomas’s fence.
The screen was shattered.
The memory chip remained intact.
Someone had tried to destroy the device after deleting the recordings.
Digital recovery would take time.
That night Thomas called me from an unlisted number.
“End the trust inquiry.”
“Stay away from us.”
“You think the pool was the worst thing that can happen to a child everyone already considers unstable?”
