Chapter 6 - THE RECORDING I RELEASED
Thomas’s supporters held a press conference.
Former officers described him as a decorated captain and devoted grandfather. Vanessa stood beside them wearing a sling she did not medically require and said I had exploited Ethan’s autism to attack her wedding.
I reacted.
Against Rebecca’s advice, I released thirty seconds from my phone recording.
The world heard Thomas say:
“Every dog knows how to swim.”
The video spread within hours.
Public opinion changed.
So did the investigation.
Thomas’s attorney argued that I had contaminated potential jurors and selectively edited evidence.
The prosecutor asked me to make no further public statements.
Ethan’s school received calls from reporters.
Parents shared the video.
A student barked at him in the hallway.
He stopped speaking at school for three days.
My decision exposed Thomas’s cruelty.
It also exposed my son.
I accepted that consequence without pretending my intentions erased it.
The wedding photographer surrendered his full schedule.
A “family intervention” had been planned at 4:10 p.m.
The champagne toast that overwhelmed Ethan was scheduled for 4:08.
Vanessa had instructed the band to increase the speaker volume immediately beforehand.
She knew sudden noise could trigger him.
The provocation was planned.
The photographer also remembered a sealed envelope on the study desk marked:
TRUSTEE RESIGNATION — LAURA HALE.
Thomas had prepared my removal before the party.
Then the venue’s catering manager admitted Thomas dismissed the hired lifeguard two hours early, claiming the pool would be closed.
No barrier was installed.
No cover was placed.
The alarm was turned off.
Thomas had created a pool without safety protections before Ethan arrived.
Vanessa still insisted the shove was impulsive.
Rebecca received an email from the trust bank’s former officer.
He wanted to speak.
