Chapter 4 - MY MOTHER’S TRUST
The scheduled documents concerned the Helen Hale Special Care Trust.
My mother had created it six years before her death to support Ethan’s therapy, education, housing, and long-term independence.
The trust held approximately 2.4 million dollars.
I served as Ethan’s personal representative.
Thomas managed investments as co-trustee.
Vanessa ran the Hale Ability Foundation, which received grants for disability programs.
For months, Thomas had urged me to sign an amendment allowing the foundation to coordinate Ethan’s care.
I refused because no independent evaluator had recommended it.
The document prepared for the party went much farther.
It transferred payment authority from me to Thomas and permitted the foundation to approve vendors without my signature.
My name already appeared on a preliminary copy.
The signature was not mine.
Thomas called it a draft.
The trust bank called it an attempted instruction.
Rebecca requested five years of accounting records.
Thomas resisted, claiming the family dispute had no connection to Ethan’s assault.
The court ordered limited disclosure.
The first statements showed hundreds of payments to therapy providers.
Several names were familiar.
One was not.
Bright Path Development Services had received 486,000 dollars in three years.
Its address belonged to a suite above Vanessa’s wedding planner.
I called the therapists who actually worked with Ethan.
None had heard of Bright Path.
One invoice claimed Ethan received forty hours of residential behavioral training during a month when he attended school every weekday and lived with me.
Someone had charged his trust for care he never received.
The trust’s independent review was scheduled for Ethan’s tenth birthday, five months away.
At that point, a corporate trustee would examine every payment and assume investment control.
Thomas had fought the change.
Now I understood part of the urgency.
That evening Rebecca received the forged amendment’s metadata.
It had been created on Vanessa’s laptop.
