Chapter 4 - VANESSA’S VERSION

Vanessa requested a second interview.

Her lawyer sat beside her.

She looked different without sunglasses.

Smaller.

Less polished.

“I authorized removal of an ugly wall panel.”

Detective Ellis asked:

“Did you know it was part of the pool safety system?”

“I thought it was redundant.”

“Who told you?”

“Daniel.”

Daniel’s lawyer objected publicly later.

Privately, the marriage started cracking within forty-eight hours of returning from St. Lucia.

Vanessa continued:

“Halston’s designers hated it.”

“Did Halston ask you to remove a functioning safety device?”

“No.”

“Did you tell them it was functioning?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Did you read Evan Mercer’s failed inspection?”

“No.”

“You replied to the email.”

Vanessa went still.

Detective Ellis placed the printout down.

FROM EVAN MERCER:

Gate must remain out of service until self-closing hinge, magnetic latch and audible alarm are repaired.

VANESSA:

Understood. We need the rear elevation clean before Halston walkthrough. Daniel will handle temporary safety.

Vanessa stared.

“I forgot.”

Maybe.

Memory is evidence only when supported.

“What's temporary safety?”

“I thought Daniel was putting a secondary lock.”

“Was one installed?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why remove the indoor panel before repairs?”

“Because workers were painting.”

“Why did you carry equipment out before sunrise Sunday?”

Vanessa’s breathing changed.

“I helped my husband move a bag.”

“To where?”

“Maintenance storage.”

“Which?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Why before your airport departure?”

“He said he wanted the terrace cleaned.”

“What was inside?”

“I don’t know.”

“You told Emma it had nothing to do with Sofia before you knew what Sofia died from.”

Vanessa looked toward her attorney.

He stopped the interview.

No confession.

Good.

Police did not need one.

Daniel’s interview was harder.

He said the hardware had been removed because Mercer’s system was defective.

“Why not install the replacement?”

“It was on order.”

“Why certify pass?”

“Administrative error.”

“Why remove the old alarm?”

“It gave false alarms.”

“Why cut the indoor panel?”

“Renovation.”

“Temporary barrier?”

“A chain lock.”

“Where?”

No chain lock had been found.

“Did you remove it before travel?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Black bag?”

“Old equipment.”

“Where is it?”

“Service shed.”

Search teams found no black sack.

They did find freshly disturbed earth along the maintenance trail.

Not enough to excavate randomly without authorization.

A search warrant followed.

The family funeral had ended.

The investigation had become serious.

I hated that people began treating the case like entertainment.

Reporter outside Carter Grove:

CHILD DROWNING LINKED TO FAMILY PROPERTY DEAL?

No conclusion.

Just question mark.

I refused interviews.

Sofia was not content.

Halston Retreats paused negotiations.

Correct.

The family company continued operating.

Staff remained employed.

No immediate collapse.

Daniel was placed on administrative leave by the independent managers of Carter Heritage.

Not by me.

Vanessa’s consulting contract suspended.

Margaret stepped away from the family foundation.

I did nothing except bury my daughter and answer questions.

Then police excavated the disturbed ground.

At twenty-eight inches, they hit black plastic.

The sack.

Sealed.

Heavy.

Detective Ellis did not open it in front of us.

Chain of custody.

Evidence facility.

The inventory came the next day.

She would tell me only part because some items required forensic analysis.

“A gate-alarm module.”

My heart stopped.

“A magnetic latch assembly.”

I closed my eyes.

“A section of wiring.”

“What else?”

“A small digital recording device.”

“The pool camera?”

“Possibly.”

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Documents wrapped in waterproof plastic.”

“What documents?”

“We’re still processing them.”

“Does Daniel know?”

“He will through counsel.”

I stared toward the covered pool.

May you like

The equipment that should have helped keep Sofia out of the water had been buried before she died.

But we still did not know why Daniel and Vanessa believed hiding it was worth the risk.
