Chapter 16 - VANESSA’S TRIAL

Vanessa’s trial was quieter.
No family theatrics.
She had no blood relationship to me.
The jury saw her messages.
Her authorization.
Her hands holding the black sack open.
Her email suppressing the Mercer report.
Her airport call.
Her knowledge of Sofia’s Tuesday visit.
Her warning:
“You’re gambling.”
The defense built around that warning.
“She recognized risk and told Daniel to fix it.”
The prosecutor:
“Then helped him remove the safeguards anyway.”
Both true.
Vanessa testified.
Risky.
Her choice.
“Did you want Sofia hurt?”
“No.”
“Did you love her?”
“Yes.”
“Did you remove the indoor alarm panel?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I thought Daniel had safety handled.”
“Did you hold the bag while he removed external components?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know the gate had no physical lock Sunday?”
“I knew I hadn’t seen one.”
“Did you leave anyway?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell Margaret?”
“No.”
“Emma?”
“No.”
“Trustee?”
“No.”
“Why?”
She cried.
“Because I wanted the Halston deal to stay alive.”
No dramatic excuse.
Then:
“Why ignore calls from the hospital?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because once Daniel said it might be the pool, I knew what it could mean.”
“You knew Sofia was dead?”
“No.”
“You knew she might be hurt?”
“Yes.”
“And you went snorkeling?”
Her attorney objected.
Prejudicial.
Overruled within context.
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.”
That detail had no causal role in the drowning.
It had enormous moral weight.
The jury still had to separate.
Verdict:
Involuntary manslaughter — guilty.
Evidence tampering — guilty.
Obstruction — guilty.
Business fraud — guilty.
Conspiracy — guilty.
One child-endangerment count tied to direct custody — not guilty because she was not supervising Sofia.
Again.
Precision.
Her sentence was somewhat lower than Daniel’s because her property-management authority and direct control over repairs were less.
Still substantial.
Restitution.
No future fiduciary or property-safety role.
As deputies led her away, she looked at me.
I looked back.
Nothing to say.
Kelsey? No.
There was no other person to complicate.
The two adults in the black-sack video had now faced juries.
That did not end the story.
The wrongful-death settlement remained.
Carter Grove’s future remained.
My mother remained trapped in ninety seconds.
I remained trapped in Saturday’s dragging gate.
And Daniel filed an appeal.
Not denying everything.
Challenging the manslaughter causation instruction.

If he won, the conviction most emotionally tied to Sofia could disappear.
The law was not done with us.
