Chapter 22 - EMMA’S FIRST VISIT

Emma was fourteen when she asked to see Trevor.

He had served years.

Completed parenting programs.

Accepted responsibility.

No contact violations.

The court approved one therapeutic video meeting first.

Then supervised in-person if she wanted.

On screen, Trevor looked older.

Gray at the temples.

Emma looked like me and nothing like me.

She asked:

“Did you see Grandma put it in the bottles?”

Trevor swallowed.

“Yes.”

My chest hurt from another room.

I was not part of session.

Therapist later told me only what Emma authorized.

“Why didn’t you tell Mom?”

“I was afraid.”

“Of Grandma?”

“Yes.”

“Of losing money?”

“Partly.”

“Of Mom leaving?”

“Yes.”

Emma stared.

“Which was biggest?”

Trevor cried.

“You leaving.”

Emma’s expression hardened.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“I know.”

“If you told Mom, Noah and Caleb might be alive.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

No defensiveness.

No:

Maybe.

No:

We can’t know.

He said yes.

Strictly, causation about future prevention cannot be certain.

But morally, he understood.

Emma ended the call after seventeen minutes.

Outside therapy she asked me:

“Do I have to forgive him to see him again?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She saw him again six months later.

May you like

Then stopped for two years.

Her choice.
