Chapter 11 - THE ARRESTS

Judith was arrested three days after toxicology confirmation.
She surrendered through counsel.
Charges initially included:
Two counts of reckless homicide or involuntary manslaughter under the applicable state statute.
Child endangerment.
Administering a harmful substance to minors.
Evidence tampering.
Obstruction.
Financial-conspiracy counts were investigated separately.
No first-degree murder charge.
No prosecutor claimed she intended Noah or Caleb to die.
The allegation was recklessness.
Knowing conduct.
Ignoring obvious risk.
Trevor was arrested later.
Not for killing the twins directly.
His charges were narrower and still serious:
Child endangerment based on knowing failure to protect after learning of prior exposure.
Evidence tampering.
Obstruction.
Conspiracy related to false post-death financial/capacity documents.
Potential financial-fraud counts.
He surrendered.
His bail conditions included no unsupervised contact with Emma.
I felt sick when I heard.
He was her father.
He had not hurt her physically.
He had also watched his mother put both her brothers at risk and said nothing.
Family court separated the issues carefully.
Emma’s therapist.
Guardian ad litem.
No instant termination of parental rights.
Good.
I wanted certainty.
Law gave process.
Then Pastor Reynolds called.
“Can I come by?”
“Yes.”
He brought no Bible.
No theology.
Only food.
He sat at Caroline’s kitchen table.
“I have replayed that funeral a hundred times.”
“So have I.”
“I should have stopped Judith before Emma had to.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I knew she was abusive to you.”
I looked at him.
“Did you?”
“I knew she humiliated you.”
“That’s not the same.”
“No.”
He took responsibility for what was his.
Not more.
Then:
“Emma asked whether God punished the babies.”
My chest broke.
“What did you tell her?”
“That I do not believe God killed her brothers because of anyone’s parenting.”
Good.
He continued:
“She heard Judith.”
Of course.
Children hear theology as evidence.
I asked Pastor:
“Do you believe in any of this right now?”
He smiled sadly.
“I believe grief is allowed to be angry.”
That was enough.
The company board postponed Northbridge again.
Judith’s voting roles suspended.
Trevor recused.
Independent committee.
The sky did not fall.
Then Rebecca showed me a financial email from the morning Judith was arrested.
Northbridge:
We remain interested subject to clean governance review.
Clean governance.
The phrase sounded almost funny.
My family had buried two babies.
Judith had been arrested.
And still the transaction could simply be reviewed.
All that pressure.
All those threats.
May you like
The deal had never required silence.
Only Judith had.
