Chapter 19 - THE DIVORCE

I filed while Trevor was in custody.
He did not contest the marriage ending.
He contested nothing financially beyond ordinary division.
Prenup preserved my Caldwell trust.
His Foster interests remained his subject to restitution and court orders.
Joint home sold.
I never returned to sleep there.
Emma’s toys were collected by professionals and Caroline.
I kept:
Her books.
The twins’ memory boxes.
One rocking chair.
No nursery furniture.
I could not.
Custody became harder.
Trevor was Emma’s father.
Family court granted me sole legal and physical custody.
His contact suspended initially.
Later therapeutic letters could be reviewed.
No automatic termination of parental rights.
I wanted his rights gone.
My lawyer said:
“Wanting is not the legal standard.”
I hated that.
Then understood.
At five, Emma asked:
“Why Daddy jail?”
I answered:
“He knew Grandma was doing something dangerous with Noah and Caleb and did not tell me or get the right help. After they died, he hid something from police.”
“Did Daddy kill them?”
“No.”
Important.
“Did Grandma?”
I paused.
“Grandma did something dangerous that caused their deaths. A court decided she committed serious crimes.”
Emma looked down.
“Did I tell?”
“Yes.”
“Did I make jail?”
“No.”
That question returned for years.
I answered the same.
