Once my payments stopped, Mom could not maintain the house alone.
Not immediately disastrous.
Reality.
She had choices.
Sell.
Downsize.
Ask Natalie for rent.
Refinance within actual means.
For the first time in years, the financial burden could not quietly flow toward me.
Mom sold.
The sale cleared mortgage and home-equity debt.
She bought a two-bedroom condo.
Smaller.
Paid mostly in cash.
Natalie rented an apartment with her children.
She complained:
“You made Mom lose the family house.”
I answered:
“No. Mom sold a house she could not afford without my subsidy.”
“You could afford it.”
“Yes.”
“And you stopped.”
“Yes.”
She stared.
