The full truth came from Natalie’s consultation notes with attorney Philip Grant.
He represented her briefly.
Then withdrew when she failed to disclose the trust reimbursements.
His file became discoverable in part through later proceedings where privilege issues were litigated; what eventually mattered was a document Natalie herself had forwarded outside counsel.

It was her plan.
Not Mom’s.
Goals:
Establish Linda as primary functional caregiver.
Demonstrate Megan’s inconsistent availability.
Document Sophie’s behavioral resistance to structure.
Obtain temporary guardianship before age-nine trust review.
Continue/rescale family-care reimbursements.
Submit housing-support request.
Add Natalie as paid secondary caregiver.
Projected annual support:
Linda caregiving: $58,000.
Natalie respite/transport: $32,000.
Housing contribution: $34,200.
Educational/behavioral services: variable.
More than $120,000 per year.
Not unrestricted trust money.
A stream.
That was what Natalie wanted.
Then her private note:
If Megan controls all decisions, she will keep Sophie independent and shut family out.
There.
Not just money.
Control.
In Natalie’s mind, my independence was betrayal.
I had a career.
My own house.
Adam’s settlement.
I no longer asked permission.
She lived with Mom.
Needed help.
Every sign that Sophie was becoming independent looked like the next generation repeating my escape.
The chores had two purposes.
Genuine resentment.
And evidence.
If Sophie complied, Natalie could say Linda provided structure.
If she resisted, Natalie documented behavior.
If I protested, I became unstable.
If I reduced visits, they said I alienated family.
Every response could be rewritten.
Then Sophie walked away.
They expected her to stand at the driveway, become frightened, and return.
Mom said it on the recording:
“That’s the point.”
Return.

The plan did not require Sophie to get hurt.
It required her to learn that shelter belonged to the adult who controlled the door.
That was the central truth.
Natalie was trying to turn dependency into a financial and emotional asset.
And my mother, even while rejecting the full guardianship plan, had helped teach my daughter the lesson Natalie needed:
You stay here because we allow it.
You earn your place by obeying.
The gas station destroyed that story.
