Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN ON THE MONITOR

The woman was not pretending to be me visually.
Important.
No deepfake.
No identity mask.
She was a corporate communications consultant named Natalie Greene.
Thirty-six.
Carter Hospitality had hired her to coach executives for lender interviews.
Legitimate work.
Mostly.
Natalie confirmed through counsel:
She rehearsed a script at Pine Hollow.
She believed it was a role-play.
“Role-play of whom?”
“A beneficiary spouse.”
“Name?”
“She says she was not told.”
The script contained my name.
So someone lied to Natalie too.
Why rehearse my statement instead of simply ask me to say it?
Possibilities:
Prepare Mitchell for questions.
Prepare Caroline for expected responses.
Create a script to pressure me later.
Maybe something worse.
No conclusion.
Natalie retained a copy because she used templates.
Her version:
“I, Danielle Carter, understand the related-party nature of Carter Alpine Management and voluntarily approve the Redwood transaction after consultation with independent advisers.”
False if I said it.
I had never consulted anyone about Redwood.
Then:
“I have no objection to Mitchell Carter communicating on my behalf regarding routine implementation.”
More authority.
Then:
“I understand that recent emotional stress has not impaired my judgment.”
Why include that?
Rachel stared.
“Because someone expected capacity to be questioned.”
Or wanted it raised.
Then the final line:
“I confirm that no family member has pressured or coerced me.”
There.
The script was not about business alone.
It was designed to create evidence against coercion allegations before I had made any.
Why?
Because Elias Ward’s letter?
Because they expected I might object?
Because they knew domestic pressure existed?
Not yet central truth.
Then Caroline’s own time entries from Pine Hollow surfaced.
Client witness preparation — DC consent scenario.
DC.
Danielle Carter.
She had lied on the phone when saying she was told I had already approved?
Maybe she was told approval expected.
Need nuance.
Her lawyer contacted Rachel.
Caroline wanted formal cooperation.
Not immunity.
Proffer.
She feared Mitchell and Theresa would make her scapegoat.
The board suspended her pending review.
At the proffer, she admitted affair.
Eleven months.
She admitted drafting the script.
Why?
Mitchell told her Elias Ward had left a letter that could challenge family authority if Danielle claimed pressure.
“What authority?”
Caroline claimed she never saw the letter.
Mitchell described it as:
“Old Brooks paranoia.”
He said the letter warned Danielle against signing under family influence.
If the letter surfaced, Mitchell wanted evidence I had signed voluntarily.
That was why the script mentioned coercion.
Caroline asked:
“Why not let Danielle’s own lawyer review?”
Mitchell:
“She’ll turn it into war.”
She accepted.
Bad judgment.
Professional misconduct maybe.
Then:
Did Caroline know my iPad was used?
“Yes.”
Why?
Mitchell said I had authorized him to apply my digital certificate to draft documents.
She did not verify directly.
Conflict.
Affair.
Terrible lawyering.
Did she create the signature?
“No.”
Forensics later supported that the certificate activation came from Mitchell’s user session.
Then the cabin affair and business work overlapped.
They stayed overnight.
Had sex.
Then drafted documents.
The personal and professional corruption literally occupied the same room.
Caroline cried during proffer.
No sympathy required.
Then she said:
“There’s something Theresa doesn’t know.”
Rachel and I both leaned forward.
“Mitchell found Ward’s letter two years ago.”
We knew he signed for it.
“He opened it.”
My skin went cold.
“The seal is unbroken.”
“The one you have is not the first envelope.”
There.
“Where is the first?”
“Mitchell burned it.”
I stopped.
“Then how do I have an original sealed letter?”
Caroline shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then:
“But I know what Mitchell said after reading it.”
“What?”
Caroline looked directly at me.
“He said, ‘If Danielle ever sees this, my mother loses the company.’”
Not money.
The company.
May you like
Theresa’s control.
The central secret was two chapters away.
