Chapter 25 - DANIELLE COOKS

I cooked on my fifty-fifth birthday.
Voluntarily.
Daniel offered restaurant.
I said no.
Sophie and her husband came.
Two friends.
Small dinner.
I made pasta.
Roasted vegetables.
Chocolate cake.
Halfway through chopping garlic, Daniel walked into the kitchen.
“Need help?”
“No.”
He froze dramatically.
“Is this a trap?”
“Leave.”
He kissed my cheek.
Left.
I laughed.
Theresa once believed cooking proved submission.
For years afterward, I avoided hosting because I wanted to prove I was free.
Both gave her too much control.
Eventually I cooked because I liked cooking.
That was mine before Carter family.
I took it back.
At dinner, Sophie raised a glass.
“To Danielle, who is terrifying about consent forms.”
Everyone laughed.
Daniel added:
“And prenups.”
More laughter.
I rolled my eyes.
Then Sophie said:
“Seriously. Happy birthday.”
Fifty-five.
No transaction activated.
No trust clause.
No board review.
Just age.
Beautiful.
After cake, Daniel handed me a small gift.
A fountain pen.
“Dangerous.”
“Why?”
“I might sign things.”
“Only after reading.”
Correct.
Inside the box he had engraved:
YOUR NAME, YOUR CHOICE.
Too sentimental.
I loved it.
I used that pen for the next ten years.

Not because every signature required symbolism.
Because sometimes symbolism is allowed when chosen.
