Chapter 12 - CAROLINE’S LICENSE

Caroline faced two systems.
Criminal investigators.
And the state bar.
Being an attorney matters.
She had represented Carter Hospitality while sleeping with an executive.
Conflict.
She drafted documents affecting his wife.
Conflict.
She relied on supposed spousal authority without independent confirmation.
Potential misconduct.
Did she forge my signature?
Evidence said no.
Did she knowingly use a document she suspected was unauthorized?
Harder.
Her proffer became specific.
Mitchell told her:
“Danielle gave me permission to handle routine trust matters.”
Caroline knew the Redwood consent was not routine.
She asked him once:
“Should Sloan review?”
No Rachel yet. I had not hired Rachel then.
She asked:
“Should Hanover speak directly with Danielle?”
Mitchell:
“She hates this stuff.”
Caroline accepted.
Then after their affair began, she had even more reason to avoid direct contact with me.
Self-protection infected legal judgment.
She admitted:
“I knew if Danielle entered the transaction process personally, she might discover us.”
There.
Affair and finance merged.
She did not want me informed because informed Danielle might ask:
Why is Caroline at Pine Hollow?
Why does Caroline own a piece of Carter Alpine?
Why is Caroline drafting my consent?
All three would expose her.
So she rationalized Mitchell’s authority.
The bar later suspended her license pending final disciplinary process.
No immediate permanent disbarment before hearing.
Appropriate.
Criminal prosecutors offered cooperation arrangement on false-statement/conspiracy counts.
Her role narrower than Mitchell’s.
She accepted eventually.
Then I asked the question I had avoided.
“Was she pregnant?”
Rachel blinked.
“What?”
“Caroline.”
“Why would you think that?”
“Because Theresa said something once.”
“What?”
Three months earlier:
“At least Caroline understands what it means to continue a family.”
I thought she meant career.
Now?
I feared.
Rachel asked Caroline’s counsel only if relevant to divorce discovery.
No.
Caroline was not pregnant.
Good.
Not because pregnancy would make affair worse.
Because I did not need another child turned into a symbol.
Then Mitchell admitted affair in divorce response.
No fight.
Duration:
Ten months.
Not eleven?
Caroline said eleven.
A discrepancy.
Who cares.
It began after Pine Hollow work started.
Meaning affair may have grown from collaboration, not vice versa.
Still betrayal.
Then one surprising fact.
Theresa had confronted Mitchell about Caroline once.
Not to stop affair morally.
Email:
If Danielle finds out before Redwood closes, you’re an idiot.
Mitchell:
I know.
Theresa:
End it or hide it better.
There.
She knew.
She chose transaction stability over my marriage.
I read that message once.
Then stopped reading Theresa emails unless legally necessary.
Some evidence teaches nothing after the pattern is clear.
Then Rachel said:
“You need to decide whether to remain in the marital house.”
“No.”
“Good.”
I leased a two-bedroom apartment downtown.
My own name.
My own account.
No family office.
I took:
Clothes.
Books.
Mother’s jewelry.
My father’s letter.
The sealed envelope.
Nothing else mattered.
On the first night, I slept badly.
At 3 a.m., I realized why.
No one had asked what I was cooking tomorrow.
Silence felt unfamiliar.
Then my phone buzzed.
Mitchell.
Approved parenting app? No children. Lawyer portal message.
I know I have no right to ask, but are you safe?
I stared.
Then typed:
Yes.
He replied:
Good.
No manipulation.
No request.

That almost hurt more.
Because it reminded me why I had loved him.
