Chapter 7 - THERESA’S MONEY

Theresa was not poor.

She owned:

A house worth roughly $4 million.

Carter Hospitality shares.

Investment accounts.

Carter Alpine Management interests.

Why would Mitchell say she could lose everything?

Because “everything” often means control.

Theresa had borrowed against part of her Carter holdings.

Why?

To finance a luxury senior-resort expansion she personally championed.

The project failed.

Debt:

$18.7 million.

Collateral:

Her shares and future distributions.

The Redwood closing would produce:

Company liquidity.

Management fees.

Transition payment.

Potential distributions.

Enough to refinance or reduce her personal exposure.

Not erase all debt.

Help substantially.

If the related-party contract was reduced or the sale delayed, lenders could demand more collateral.

She might lose voting influence.

Not become homeless.

That distinction mattered.

Rachel said:

“Pressure.”

“Not justification.”

“Correct.”

Then we found Theresa’s email from two months earlier.

To Mitchell:

Danielle needs to stop acting like Brooks money makes her independent.

Mitchell:

She is independent. That’s the problem.

Theresa:

Then make her feel married again.

I read it twice.

“What does that mean?”

Rachel answered:

“We don’t know.”

Then:

Theresa:

Put her back in the center of family life. She has too much time to question things.

There.

Dinners.

Hosting.

Serving.

Not necessarily a criminal plot.

A strategy of social control.

Keep Danielle busy.

Keep her domestic.

Keep her identity wrapped around Carter expectations.

Then:

Mitchell:

Her birthday activates direct conflict review. We only need clean paperwork before then.

Theresa:

Then get it.

My skin went cold.

She knew about the birthday clause.

Of course.

Had she known about the false signature?

Not yet proven.

Then a later message:

Theresa:

Caroline says video is safest.

Mitchell:

Danielle won’t do a video.

Theresa:

Then make it routine.

Video.

Recording room.

Witness preparation.

Still fragments.

Then another:

Mitchell:

She’s been emotional since her mother’s anniversary. Don’t push too hard.

My mother died when I was nineteen.

August.

I still became quieter around the anniversary.

Theresa:

Emotional can be useful if Ward’s letter ever surfaces.

I stopped breathing.

Elias Ward’s letter.

Theresa knew it existed.

Not content perhaps.

But enough.

“Why would emotion be useful?”

Rachel’s face hardened.

“Possibly to attack your judgment.”

There.

Still not proof.

Then Meredith from Hanover called.

Signature metadata returned.

The supposed digital consent had been created through my credentials.

Device:

My old iPad.

Location:

Pine Hollow Cabin.

Date:

Five weeks earlier.

I had not been at Pine Hollow.

Where was the iPad?

I thought.

Then remembered.

Mitchell took it on a “work retreat” because his laptop charger failed.

He brought it back two days later.

The signature used my valid certificate.

No obvious forgery from outside.

Someone used my actual device and credentials.

Identity misuse.

Potentially.

Could Mitchell claim authorization?

Maybe.

I had shared passwords before.

Bad.

Not permission for this.

Then the anonymous texter finally sent something verifiable.

A photograph.

Pine Hollow interior.

A small room.

Chair.

Camera.

Light.

Tripod.

On a table:

My iPad.

Beside it:

A printed script.

Only one line legible:

“I, Danielle Carter, understand and approve…”

I felt sick.

Rachel enlarged no more than necessary.

“Who took this?”

“I don’t know.”

Then another image arrived.

Caroline standing beside the tripod.

Mitchell behind her.

And on the monitor between them was a video of a woman rehearsing my words.

Not me.

An actress?

A staff member?

Impossible to tell from the still.

May you like

The cabin was not only an affair site.

Someone had been rehearsing Danielle Carter.
