Chapter 8 - THE SCHEDULE CALVIN MOVED
Calvin denied the voice belonged to him.
It did not.
The speaker was younger and rougher.
Investigators compared it with staff interviews and identified the former security supervisor, Dean Walsh.
Dean had left the state.
His bank records showed a $120,000 transfer from a consulting company registered to Calvin’s wife.
Calvin described it as legitimate security severance.
No contract supported the payment.
Nora subpoenaed the “schedule” referenced in Martin’s watch recording.
Calvin claimed ignorance.
The neutral examiner searched his office under a preservation order and found a locked fireproof cabinet labeled RICHARD CARTER — SUCCESSION.
The cabinet was empty.
Its access log showed it had been opened during Ethan’s Chicago trip.
The electronic key belonged to Evelyn.
A backup server contained file names but no documents.
MATERNAL SUCCESSION SCHEDULE.
FIRST LIVE DESCENDANT CERTIFICATE.
INTERIM TRUSTEE TERMINATION.
GRACE CARTER CONSENT.
The names gave shape to the threat without revealing the full arrangement.
Ethan stared at the list.
“My father never told me.”
“Maybe he expected the lawyer to,” Nora said.
“Calvin was his lawyer.”
“He was also Evelyn’s.”
Dual loyalty had allowed one person to control every interpretation after Richard’s death.
The court ordered Calvin to produce backups.
He reported a ransomware incident had destroyed them two years earlier.
His insurer had no record of the attack.
Meanwhile, Evelyn launched a new strategy.
She filed a civil petition claiming Ethan was unfit to manage Carter Care because he abandoned negotiations, assaulted her, and exposed company secrets through his wife.
The petition requested temporary voting authority.
She attached messages Ethan had sent during our marriage.
One read:
Sometimes I think Grace wants to take the company apart just to prove she can.
I remembered the argument.
I had found unexplained vendor payments. Ethan accused me of treating his family like an audit target.
He apologized later.
The message remained.
Truth contained his doubt.
The board hearing became another place where our marriage could injure the case.
Ethan testified that I had raised legitimate compliance concerns and that he dismissed some because he feared conflict with Evelyn.
Owning the failure cost him authority.
It increased credibility.
The board appointed an independent interim chair instead of Evelyn or Ethan.
Evelyn lost control without Ethan receiving it.
That was healthier than victory through inheritance.
At home, I received a call from an unknown number.
Martin’s voice whispered, “Do not trace me.”
“Where are you?”
“I can’t come back until Dean is found.”
“Did Evelyn lock me up because of the baby?”
He breathed unsteadily.
“She needed you to sign before the birth certificate was filed.”
“What happens after?”
A crash sounded in the background.
