Chapter 15 - THE DOCUMENT RICHARD STARTED

Richard had drafted an emergency custodianship mechanism after learning I was pregnant.
His version allowed Evelyn to act only if Ethan and I both died or became medically incapable, confirmed by two independent physicians and Heritage Fiduciary.
It was cautious.
Calvin altered it after Richard’s death.
He removed independent confirmation.
He expanded Evelyn’s authority.
He attached Ethan’s signature from a legitimate surgery authorization.
Evelyn used the altered version inside the enclosure.
Richard started the document.
Calvin weaponized it.
Evelyn enforced it.
Ethan’s carelessness supplied signatures and access.
The chain resisted simple villains without reducing anyone’s responsibility.
Calvin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit financial fraud, forgery, false notarization, obstruction, and identity-related offenses.
His cooperation agreement required surrender of his law license, restitution, and testimony.
He admitted paying Dean to remove Martin.
He claimed he believed Martin would be detained only long enough for the merger to close.
“That is kidnapping described as scheduling,” Ruiz said.
Calvin lowered his eyes.
He also identified Paul Mercer, the hospital administrator, as the person who entered false medical notes after the password reset.
Paul claimed Calvin told him the entries came from Dr. Patel’s handwritten file.
He never verified.
He received $40,000 through Haven Strategic.
Prosecutors charged him with unauthorized medical-record access and conspiracy-related offenses.
The hospital terminated him and notified every patient whose chart he accessed.
Evelyn remained free on bond under electronic monitoring because her charges had not yet been consolidated and her attorneys argued she posed no flight risk.
The judge imposed strict no-contact and asset restrictions.
She violated them through a family friend who delivered a toy to Ivy.
Inside the stuffed rabbit was a recording device.
The friend claimed ignorance.
The toy had come sealed from Evelyn’s assistant.
Police traced the purchase and programming to Dean’s brother.
The judge revoked Evelyn’s bond.
Before deputies reached her temporary residence, she disappeared.
Her ankle monitor lay on the bathroom floor.
A vehicle registered to Haven Strategic crossed a toll bridge thirty minutes later.
Evelyn did not head toward an airport.
She drove toward Carter House.
The estate remained under court preservation.
Inside Richard’s archive wing were documents not yet fully inventoried.
Laurel called me.
“Stay where you are.”
I obeyed.
Ethan did too.
Police surrounded the estate.

Through the security feed, Evelyn entered the old service corridor carrying a red fuel container.
The cage door stood open behind her.
