Chapter 1 - THE KEY BENEATH HER COLLAR

The iron bars cut into my shoulder blades as Ethan’s face appeared on the other side of the enclosure.

For one second, I thought exhaustion had invented him.

Then his wedding ring struck the metal.

“Grace!”

My husband gripped the bars and pulled as if he could tear them apart with his hands.

Recognition broke through the terror that had kept my body rigid for hours.

“Ethan?”

My voice barely existed.

He dropped to his knees and reached between the bars. I crawled close enough to place my trembling hand inside his.

His fingers closed around mine.

Warm.

Real.

The moment I felt him, the strength I had been using to remain upright began to vanish.

“Grace—what did she do to you?”

I tried to answer.

My lips were too dry. My tongue felt thick. One arm remained curved beneath my belly because every time I stopped supporting its weight, a deep pressure pulled across my back.

The padlock hung beside Ethan’s face.

Heavy.

Scratched.

Impossible to reach from inside.

“Water,” I whispered.

Ethan looked behind him.

“Martin!”

The house steward stood in the hallway holding a phone. His face was gray.

Slow footsteps approached before he could move.

Evelyn appeared in the doorway.

My mother-in-law wore cream trousers and a pale silk blouse, as if she had walked into the abandoned service wing by accident. A chain disappeared beneath her collar.

Ethan stood.

He positioned himself between her and me.

Evelyn forced a smile.

“Ethan, let me explain.”

His eyes dropped to the small shape beneath her collar.

The key.

Her confidence broke.

Ethan crossed the room.

His palm struck her face.

Evelyn fell onto one hip, her heel scraping against the concrete.

“Give me the key. Now.”

She stared at him, one hand pressed to her cheek.

“You hit your mother.”

“You locked my wife in a cage.”

“She was dangerous.”

“To whom?”

Evelyn looked past him at me.

I recoiled.

Ethan followed her stare, then reached down and ripped the chain from her neck.

The key shook in his hand as he forced it into the padlock.

Once.

Twice.

The lock opened.

He pulled the iron door outward and entered before I could move.

“I’ve got you.”

My knees folded.

He caught me beneath the arms and lowered me against his chest.

The smell of his shirt—soap, rain, and the faint cedar scent of his office—made my eyes burn.

“You came back.”

“I’m here.”

Pain tightened across my abdomen.

Not the dull ache I had endured earlier.

This one wrapped around my body and dragged downward.

I cried out and gripped Ethan’s sleeve.

“The baby.”

His arm tightened around me.

“What?”

“Something’s wrong.”

Martin finally moved. He raised the phone and shouted our location to the emergency dispatcher.

Ethan carried me into the hallway.

Evelyn remained on the floor, watching us with hatred beneath the shock.

As we passed Martin, he caught Ethan’s shoulder.

“I called yesterday,” he whispered.

Ethan stopped.

Martin looked toward Evelyn.

“She canceled the ambulance before it reached the gate.”
