Chapter 8 - AFTER THE RAID

Agents did not arrest everyone in the ballroom.

Important.

They detained certain people briefly.

Served warrants.

Seized devices.

Separated witnesses.

Collected company laptops from the presentation room.

Victoria’s personal phone.

Julian’s phone.

Two executive tablets.

Boxes from Harrow Response offices.

One agent secured the ballroom office safe.

Guests were allowed to leave after identification and basic questions where appropriate.

No movie-style mass handcuffing.

Julian was arrested by local police on the assault allegation after hospital documentation and witness statements.

Federal agents did not need to turn his slap into their case.

Separate.

Victoria was not arrested that afternoon.

Neither was Harrow CFO Martin Crowe.

That disappointed online spectators later.

Investigations are not theater schedules.

At the hospital I received one federal notice.

My identity was formally considered compromised.

A protective credit and tax protocol began.

The government did not promise me immunity because I was not charged.

I had still copied files improperly.

Naomi remained careful.

Then the Harrow board issued a statement.

Harrow Meridian Group is cooperating fully with authorities regarding a limited inquiry concerning vendor documentation at a subsidiary.

Limited.

Vendor documentation.

Beautiful language.

Then:

The family condemns violence of any kind and is reviewing the private incident involving Julian and Sloane Harrow.

Private.

Sixty witnesses.

Wonderful.

Victoria’s attorney sent me another message through Naomi.

Offer:

Separate residence paid for by Harrow family.

Full prenatal and postpartum medical support.

$3 million marital settlement reserve.

No immediate divorce filing.

Mutual confidentiality.

No public discussion of federal inquiry.

I laughed.

“Is that a bribe?”

Naomi shook her head.

“Settlement proposal. Badly timed. Not necessarily criminal.”

“What do they want?”

“Silence.”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then:

“They also want the external drive you copied destroyed.”

I stared.

“They know.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Julian told them.”

Of course.

“They’re threatening trade-secret litigation.”

“Can they?”

“Yes.”

“Would they win?”

“Depends on files, access rights, whistleblower law, privilege, damages.”

Consequences.

My mistake had not vanished because the Harrows were worse.

I felt the baby move.

Naomi said:

“We can fight two truths at once.”

That became my favorite sentence of the year.

The Harrows could have used my identity unlawfully.

I could still have copied material I had no right to take.

One wrong does not delete another.

Then Agent Ortiz called.

“We recovered something from Julian’s locked case.”

“What?”

“I cannot disclose details yet.”

“Is it about MWL?”

Pause.

“Yes.”

“Did he know?”

Another pause.

“I cannot answer yet.”

That pause told me enough.

May you like

But suspicion was not confirmation.

Not until the affidavit opened.
