Chapter 11 - THE INDICTMENT

The grand jury indictment came three weeks later.
Counts against Victoria:
Conspiracy to defraud the United States.
Wire fraud.
False statements tied to vendor certifications.
Money laundering counts tied to specific alleged proceeds.
Not every transaction.
Not every company.
Counts against Julian:
Conspiracy.
False statements.
Wire fraud tied to selected certifications and transfers.
No charge for forging my signature personally because evidence suggested family-office personnel handled the actual electronic execution.
Important.
Knowledge and participation were charged.
Different from authorship.
Daniel Pike, MWL’s nominal operating manager, was charged too.
Martin Crowe had already pleaded to a narrower conspiracy count and agreed to cooperate.
Elise Porter was not charged at that time.
The government stated she had raised internal objections before eventually cooperating.
The Harrow family released a statement:
We categorically deny that Harrow Response defrauded taxpayers. The government is criminalizing ordinary subcontracting structures and relying on disgruntled former employees and a spouse engaged in a hostile marital dispute.
There I was.
Hostile spouse.
The counterattack began.
Within forty-eight hours Harrow Meridian sued me civilly.
Trade-secret misappropriation.
Unauthorized computer access.
Breach of confidentiality.
Interference with business relationships.
Some claims looked retaliatory.
Some were not frivolous.
I had copied files.
Naomi said:
“We are not going to pretend you didn’t.”
“Can they bankrupt me?”
“No.”
“Could I owe damages?”
“Potentially, depending on what you took and what they can prove.”
Consequences.
I hated that the people who used my identity still had a legitimate argument about one thing I had done.
Reality refused to become convenient.
Then my father called.
“Drop your company under my legal umbrella.”
“No.”
“Sloane.”
“No.”
“I can protect you.”
“I know.”
“Then why won’t you let me?”
Because Julian had just spent years treating access to Harrow power as proof I needed them.
I did not want to replace one dependency with another.
“I’ll accept help with legal fees if structured as a loan.”
My father sounded offended.
“I’m your father.”
“Exactly.”
Silence.
Then:
“Fine.”
He hated it.
May you like
He agreed.
That mattered too.
