Chapter 16 - THE HOUSE KEY

Police returned our keys after evidence release.

My key ring.

Car.

House.

Mailbox.

Shed key.

Fenella’s old copy had been seized.

We changed locks anyway.

Front.

Back.

Garage.

Shed.

Then smart lock.

Not for surveillance.

For access records.

Only:

Me.

Auberon.

Emergency code sealed with attorney? No. Better one code for trusted neighbor Mrs. Hale with our permission.

No family by default.

Auberon held Fenella’s old brass key in his palm before police took it for disposal/evidence release.

“She had this for six years.”

I said nothing.

Then:

“I thought giving Mom a key meant she was included.”

“Maybe it did.”

“And taking it away felt cruel.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“That is insane.”

“Not insane. Enmeshed.”

Therapy word.

He rolled his eyes.

Still kept using it.

Then we changed our emergency contacts.

Hospital.

Doctor.

Employer.

No Fenella.

My mother lived across the country, so Mrs. Hale became nearby backup.

Ordinary infrastructure.

Then the postpartum plan.

We wrote our own.

No overnight guests.

Visitors by invitation.

Meal delivery list.

Auberon taking three weeks leave.

My mother visiting for one week later if I asked.

Not because mothers are automatically unsafe.

Because consent needed to be visible.
