Chapter 11 - AUBERON’S PART IN THE FAKE TEXTS

Auberon stopped sleeping.

He replayed the messages.

Again.

Again.

Again.

“I should have called police.”

I wanted to say yes.

Sometimes I did.

Then I remembered the fake words.

Do not come.

Do not call Maris.

Do not make this controlling.

Finish the job.

Fenella had constructed a version of me designed to punish exactly the instinct that might have saved me.

If Auberon ignored the messages and tracked me anyway, under ordinary circumstances I might have called that invasive.

Fenella knew us.

That was why it worked.

Still.

Day Three bothered me.

Auberon had asked me:

Send one photo so I know you’re safe.

Fake me replied:

No.

Then:

Auberon:

Voice note. One second.

No response.

That was when he should have escalated.

He admitted it.

“I knew something was wrong.”

“Why didn’t you?”

He stared at his hands.

“Because I didn’t want to be the husband who refused to respect space.”

There.

A good principle used past its safe limit.

Then:

“And because I was embarrassed.”

“About what?”

“My mother.”

He looked at me.

“If I called police and you were just angry at me, I’d have to admit I couldn’t tell whether my wife was missing because my mother had gotten into our marriage that deeply.”

That hurt.

Then another admission.

He had shown Fenella some of our private messages during arguments.

Not intimate ones.

Still private.

He wanted advice.

Fenella used language from those messages to impersonate me.

Auberon cried when he said:

“I gave her the dictionary.”

I took his hand.

Not absolution.

Connection.

Then:

“No more relationship texts to family.”

“Agreed.”

“No more translating your mother for me.”

“Agreed.”

“No more delayed boundaries because you want her feelings protected.”

He swallowed.

“Agreed.”

Then his slap.

He had already been cited.

Video from an officer body camera captured it clearly.

After I was safe with police.

Fenella standing.

Auberon turns.

Slaps.

No immediate defense.

He faced a separate misdemeanor assault case.

May you like

He accepted responsibility early.

That mattered later.
