Chapter 25 - RACHEL’S DAUGHTER

Rachel eventually had a child in her forties.

A daughter.

When the baby was born, Rachel’s eleven-percent descendant branch activated under the reformed structure.

Independent trustees.

No Rachel unilateral control.

No rivalry with Lily.

Rachel sent Lily a message:

Apparently girls activate branches too.

Lily replied:

Shocking.

That was all.

Later, Rachel asked whether Lily wanted to meet the baby.

She did.

The cousins had a twenty-year age gap.

No comparison possible.

Rachel watched Lily hold her daughter.

“You okay?”

Lily asked.

Rachel laughed.

“Terrified.”

“Good.”

“Why good?”

“Means you care.”

Rachel grew serious.

“I keep thinking about Thanksgiving.”

“Don’t do that to her.”

“What?”

“Make her carry what you did to me.”

Rachel went quiet.

“You’re right.”

The baby grew up without being told Lily had once taken anything from her mother.

That mattered.

Rachel’s parenting did not erase her history.

It created a chance not to repeat it.

Years later, her daughter reached across a dinner table for bread.

Rachel handed her the basket.

Nothing happened.

Exactly right.
