Chapter 20 - THE THANKSGIVING VIDEO

At fifteen, Lily asked to watch the video.

I had hoped she never would.

Maya—still her therapist occasionally—asked why.

“I want to know what I remember wrong.”

That was a mature reason.

We watched together.

Rachel’s hand.

The slap.

Lily recoiling.

Me crossing the room.

My two slaps.

Mark grabbing me.

Father-in-law pointing.

Mother-in-law comforting Rachel.

Then me at the door.

You just ruined yourselves tonight.

Lily paused.

“You looked scary.”

“Yes.”

“You hit her twice.”

“Yes.”

“Did that help me?”

I swallowed.

“Not really.”

“You said sorry?”

“To you, yes. To Rachel through court too.”

“Do you wish you didn’t?”

“Yes.”

“Even though she hit me?”

“Yes.”

She looked thoughtful.

“Why?”

“Because I want you to know protecting someone and hurting someone back are not automatically the same thing.”

She nodded.

“Dad looks terrible.”

Mark, sitting across the room, laughed painfully.

“Yes.”

She rewound his grab.

“Why did you do that?”

He answered.

“I was trying to stop Mom from making a scene instead of understanding Rachel had already made one by hitting you.”

“You were scared of Grandpa?”

“Yes.”

“More than me?”

Mark’s eyes filled.

“In that moment, I acted like it.”

Lily nodded.

No comforting him.

Good.

Then the final seconds.

Phones vibrating.

Rachel’s face.

Mark:

Rachel… what is this?

Lily smiled.

“Mom, you were dramatic.”

“Extremely.”

“What did you send again?”

“The first transfer record.”

“That was all?”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

“Everyone looked like you sent the FBI.”

“They knew what it meant.”

That was the difference.

One bank line did not reveal a conspiracy.

It revealed that secrecy had failed.

Lily watched once more.

Then:

“I’m done.”

We closed it.

She never asked again.

The video remained evidence archive.

Not family entertainment.

Not social media.

A recording of one ugly minute.

Nothing more.
