Chapter 16 - GRANDMOTHER’S LETTER
Lily was nine when she asked about Mother-in-law.
“Is Grandma still in trouble?”
“Her criminal case is finished. She has rules.”
“Does she miss me?”
“I think so.”
“Do I miss her?”
I almost smiled.
“That one is yours.”
She thought.
“Sometimes.”
The therapist suggested allowing a screened letter.
Mother-in-law wrote:
Lily,
I am sorry I comforted Rachel instead of you.
Direct.
Then:
I had spent years believing Rachel needed protection because family changes had been unfair to her.
Lily stopped reading.
“What family changes?”
“Your trust branch.”
“She means money?”
“Partly control.”
Lily rolled her eyes.
“Again.”
Then:
I treated your existence like a problem adults needed to manage. That was wrong.
Better.
She admitted intercepting notices.
Admitted believing Rachel deserved leadership.
Admitted calling me an outsider.
Then:
When Rachel hit you, I ran to her because I was still protecting the story I had protected for years.
Lily looked at me.
“What story?”
“That Rachel had been wronged.”
“Was she?”
“In some ways, maybe she was promised things adults should not have promised. But that never made you responsible.”
Lily nodded.
Then finished.
No demand for visit.
No guilt.
Lily said:
“I want to send one sentence.”
“What?”
Tell Grandma I read it.
That was all.
We sent it through counsel.
Mother-in-law did not respond directly.
Good.
Six months later, Lily agreed to one supervised meeting.
Neutral center.
Thirty minutes.
Mother-in-law asked:
“Can I hug you?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
They talked.
School.
Art.
Then Lily asked:
“Why didn’t you check my face?”
Mother-in-law cried.
“Because I was focused on Rachel.”
“Why?”
“Because I had trained myself to believe Rachel being upset was an emergency.”
“And me?”
“I treated your pain like the inconvenience.”
Lily stared.
“That’s mean.”
“Yes.”
Meeting ended.
No hug.
Lily said maybe another someday.
