Chapter 18 - RACHEL AND MARK

Rachel and Mark met for the first time in three years.

Public café.

No parents.

No lawyers after initial boundaries.

He told me afterward.

“She apologized.”

“For Lily?”

“Yes.”

“For you?”

“Yes.”

“For what else?”

“For making me think I had to choose her or you.”

I looked at him.

“Did she make you?”

He smiled sadly.

“No.”

Good.

Rachel described being raised as “the responsible one.”

Mark:

The charming one who escaped.

Parents told her she would eventually manage family projects.

When Mark had Lily, legal structure contradicted the story.

Rachel felt demoted by a baby.

Absurd.

Real.

She started treating Lily as a symbol.

Small slights.

Fewer gifts.

Comments.

Then the pinch.

Then Thanksgiving.

“How did Mark respond?” I asked.

“I told her explanation doesn’t make Lily responsible.”

Good.

“Did you forgive?”

“I don’t know.”

Acceptable.

Rachel eventually found work outside family investments.

Real-estate project manager.

Independent employer.

No access to descendant funds.

She was competent.

That was useful to know.

People can be good at work and still abuse power elsewhere.

Her restitution was completed over several years.

No magic bankruptcy.

No instant comeback.

She lived smaller.

Rebuilt.

Asked no access to Lily for a long time.

At twelve, Lily asked about her.

“Is Aunt Rachel still mean?”

“People change.”

“That’s not answer.”

“She has done work to change. I don’t know what relationship you want.”

“Do you trust her?”

“Not with you alone.”

“Then no.”

Fair.

Two years later:

“Maybe lunch.”

Supervised by me.

Rachel arrived nervous.

No gift.

Lily asked:

“Why did you hit me?”

Straight in.

Rachel answered:

“Because I was angry and entitled.”

Lily blinked.

“What’s entitled?”

“Thinking I deserved things that weren’t mine.”

“Oh.”

Then:

“Was the bread yours?”

Rachel almost laughed.

“No.”

“Then extra dumb.”

“Yes.”

They never became close.

May you like

They became civil.

Sometimes that is the healthier ending.
