Judith testified.
Her choice.
She admitted push.
“I was angry.”
Why stairs?
“We happened to be there.”
Messages?
Dark jokes.
“One shove won’t kill her.”
“I was being vicious in text.”
One step.
Catch rail.
“I was venting.”
No railing side?
“Planning where to stand during confrontation.”
Why?
“So she would have to listen.”
The jury would decide.
Then collateral motive.
“Yes, I wanted Nora to sign.”
“Did you push her to make her sign?”
“No.”
“Why push?”
“She insulted me.”
What insult?
“She said Northbridge could rot.”
I had said something similar earlier at table? I said burn Ashwick in frustration. Witnesses differed.
Could trigger anger.
Then:
“Did you tell Graham, ‘After Sunday she signs Monday’?”
“Yes.”
“Did you believe she would?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Nora liked Graham more than she disliked me.”
That sentence was revealing.
She expected love to do coercion’s cleanup.
Then defense humanized her.
Northbridge founder.
Forty years.
Employees.
Ashwick.
Fear of losing company.
No prior convictions.
She had invested personal money.
She believed family should share risk.
All true.
Then prosecutor cross.
“Did Nora say no?”
“Yes.”
“Did you accept it?”
“No.”
“Did you text ‘one shove won’t kill her’?”
“Yes.”
“Did you place yourself behind Nora carrying casserole?”
“Yes.”
“Did you put both hands on her back?”
“Yes.”
“Did you push?”
“Yes.”
“Did you expect fear?”
“Yes.”
“Did you want fear to make her reconsider collateral?”
Judith paused.
“No.”
The prosecutor waited.
Then showed text:
You want fear or not?
Graham:
I want her at table Monday.
Judith:
Then she needs to understand consequences.
“Was the consequence your push?”
“No.”
“What was it?”
“Losing marriage.”
“Did you tell Nora that?”
“No.”
“Then how would she understand?”
Silence.
That was the crack.
No confession.
Just an explanation that stopped working.
Trial closed.
Jury went out.
I went home.
Made pasta.
