Chapter 14 - THE MONDAY PAPERS

The actual Monday packet became evidence.
The lender had prepared it before Sunday.
It included:
Mortgage.
Owner acknowledgment.
Independent counsel certificate.
Personal consent statement.
Notarized signature page.
The lender’s lawyer testified in pretrial deposition:
“We would not have accepted signature if Nora appeared impaired, under duress, or without independent counsel.”
That mattered.
Graham and Judith’s plan could not guarantee closing if I arrived visibly injured and said I was coerced.
So what did they expect?
That I would hide the assault.
Exactly.
The family lie was not incidental.
It was necessary.
Tell them you slipped.
No police.
No hospital report blaming Judith.
No record.
Then I sign Monday looking bruised from an “accident.”
Maybe lender counsel asks.
I say I fell.
The transaction proceeds.
That made obstruction part of financial plan.
Then a text from Graham to lender Sunday afternoon:
Nora had minor household fall. She’s fine. Tomorrow remains on.
Sent before dinner.
My mouth went dry.
Time:
5:22 p.m.
I was pushed around 7:35.
He told lender I had a fall more than two hours before it happened.
That was enormous.
Graham had already pleaded.
But this authenticated timeline strengthened case against Judith too.
Why send?
He later testified he wanted lender prepared in case plan caused visible bruising.
“I expected Mom to jostle Nora enough that she might stumble.”
He had pre-reported accident.
That destroyed residual claim he did not expect physical event.
Then Judith’s defense:
Graham alone fabricated accident plan; Judith only intended verbal scare.
But her messages:
One shove won’t kill her.
She’ll catch rail.
No railing side?
Hard.
Then Monday papers also revealed deadline was not absolute.
Lender could have extended closing three days.
Judith knew.
Why Sunday urgency?
She feared Nora would call her own attorney Monday morning.
Graham had planned to hand papers at 9.
My architecture firm meeting at noon.
Judith wanted no time.
This was not merely business necessity.
It was control of timing.
Then my house became a character in the conflict.
Reporters photographed exterior.
I hated that.
Neighbors asked.
One said:
“Are you selling?”
“No.”
Another:
“Sorry.”
I planted new herbs in the courtyard.
Ordinary.
Refusing to let property become only collateral.
Then I found a small crack in basement stair plaster at home and panicked.
Different stairs.
My own.
I sat halfway down until heart slowed.
No one behind me.
I texted therapist:
Did exposure. Hated it.
She replied:
Counts.
Good.
Then Graham began preparing testimony.
Prosecutor would call him.
His plea required truth.
If he minimized, agreement at risk.
Judith sent him no messages due counsel.
But family members pressured.
“You are sending your mother to prison.”
He answered one cousin:
“She pushed Nora because I agreed to scare her. I’m sending myself too.”
That was better.
May you like
Too late.
Still better.
