Chapter 19 - MY TESTIMONY

I hated the witness stand.
Architecture trained me to speak from drawings.
Not memory under attack.
Prosecutor asked about property.
My grandmother.
Brownstone.
Why no mortgage?
I paid off renovation financing years earlier.
Why refuse Northbridge?
Risk concentration.
I already lived with a husband financially tied to company.
I did not want home tied too.
Then staircase.
I described hands.
Fall.
Judith’s sentence.
Graham’s:
Tell them you slipped.
Then slap.
I admitted before defense asked.
“I walked toward Judith and slapped her. She was not touching me at that moment.”
“Why?”
“I was furious.”
“Did that protect you?”
“No.”
“Did you complete diversion?”
“Yes.”
Then Graham grab.
I shoved free.
Fine.
Then defense.
“You despised Judith.”
“I disliked her deeply.”
“You had threatened to slap her before.”
“In a private text, figuratively.”
“And then you did.”
“Yes.”
“You threatened to burn Ashwick.”
“Figuratively.”
“You resented Northbridge.”
“No. I resented pressure to risk my property for it.”
“You wanted Graham to choose you over his mother.”
“I wanted my husband not to participate in pushing me down stairs.”
A juror looked down.
Defense continued.
“You had been drinking.”
“Half a glass of wine.”
“How do you know?”
“I poured one glass, drank part.”
“Could you have slipped?”
“Video shows hands on my back.”
No theatrics.
Then:
“Did Judith ever say, ‘Sign or I push you’?”
“No.”
“Did she mention collateral on stairs?”
“No.”
“Then your belief this was financial comes from Graham and Arthur.”
“And digital messages.”
The lawyer paused.
Fine.
Then:
“Your brownstone was worth nearly five million.”
“Yes.”
“Northbridge asked only for collateral, not ownership.”
“Yes.”
“You would have retained title.”
“Yes.”
“So Graham was not stealing your house.”
“No. He was trying to place a lien on it after I refused.”
Important distinction.
Then:
“You benefited from Northbridge income during marriage.”
“Yes.”
“Would successful Ashwick have benefited your household?”
“Possibly.”
“So refusing collateral could hurt your own finances.”
“Yes.”
“Why refuse?”
“Because benefit does not erase risk.”
That felt like the whole case.
Then defense:
“Did you want Judith punished?”
“Yes.”
“How severely?”
“I want the court to decide.”
Not satisfying.
True.
I stepped down.
My hands shook for an hour.
May you like
No heroic feeling.
Just relief.
