Chapter 22 - JULIAN

Julian arrived at thirty-nine weeks.

Not early.

No medical link to the rolling-pin assault.

Labor began at 2:11 a.m.

My sister? I had no sister. My friend Rebecca drove me? Dad would overreact. I called Dad, then told him not to come until asked.

He obeyed.

Barely.

My doula met me at the hospital.

My obstetrician arrived later.

Fourteen hours.

Epidural.

Then pushing.

Then Julian.

Seven pounds, eight ounces.

Pink.

Loud.

Healthy.

I put him on my chest.

For the first minute, nothing else existed.

Then life returned.

Preston.

I had decided weeks earlier he could visit at the hospital once, supervised by a social worker and security nearby but not inside the room unless needed.

My choice.

Not court order.

He arrived the next afternoon.

No Dorinda.

No flowers.

No lawyer.

He washed his hands.

Stood six feet away.

I said:

"You can hold him."

His face broke.

He sat.

I handed Julian over.

Preston cried.

Not manipulative.

Not enough to repair marriage.

Still real.

He whispered:

"Hey."

Julian slept.

Preston looked at me.

"I’m sorry."

I said:

"Not here."

He nodded.

Good.

The hospital was not a confession booth.

It was our son’s first day.
