Chapter 16 - VANCE MERIDIAN WITHOUT A VANCE

Helena Ross became permanent CEO.

No Vance surname.

The company did not hold a funeral for dynasty.

It held quarterly earnings.

Boring.

Healthy.

The board restructured governance.

Two employee directors.

Three independent directors.

One institutional investor seat.

One Cole-protected observer seat.

No automatic Vance family chair.

The forty-eight-percent protective block remained.

Twenty-four in my adult Cole branch.

Twenty-four in Ava’s descendant branch.

But neither branch could vote major actions alone.

First Commonwealth and independent co-fiduciaries remained involved.

I received consultation rights.

Not executive control.

Adrian held a protector role only until Ava’s independent structures were fully established.

He planned to step down eventually.

Good.

Vance family economic ownership remained.

Ethan still had lawful shares after release.

Sarah retained whatever lawful personal equity was not forfeited or used for restitution.

Julian’s trust interests remained subject to legal restrictions.

Beatrice’s too.

No revenge confiscation beyond law.

The company’s related-party rules changed.

No family-office vendor without independent bids.

No reserve spending without dual external approval.

No reimbursement coded “family” without actual governing authority.

No portable terminal connected to beneficiary reserve accounts.

That last policy almost made me laugh.

The hospital changed too.

Donor access no longer overrode patient visitor control.

The Vance Rehabilitation Wing kept its name.

I considered asking the hospital to remove it.

Then decided no.

A name on a wall was less important than rules behind the doors.

The hospital donated no settlement to me as charity theater.

Civil mediation produced compensation for security failure, trauma treatment, and documented harm.

I accepted.

Some people online said:

“Rich woman gets richer.”

They had no idea what civil damages were for.

I stopped reading comments.

Ava turned one.

Birthday.

Small.

No Vance relatives from the criminal cases.

Adrian.

My mother, Helen Cole.

Friends.

Ava smashed cake into her face.

I laughed until I cried.

The frosting was blue because the bakery ran out of pink.

Nobody cared.

A color.

Not lineage.

Not heir status.

Just frosting.

Ethan sent a birthday card from custody.

I stored it.

May you like

Ava could decide later.

No adult’s guilt needed access before she could understand it.
