Ethan’s criminal case hurt differently.
Sarah was cruel.
Beatrice terrifying.
Julian controlling.
Ethan had been my husband.
He knew how I slept.
How I took coffee.
Which songs made me cry.
He knew I was afraid of hospital complications before labor.
He also knew the PIN demand was coming.
Not violence.
Demand.
Pressure.
The prosecutor showed me his cooperation agreement before plea.
He admitted:
Stealing the card.
Attempting the $198,000 transaction.
Knowing I had not authorized it.
Following Sarah upstairs after the failed PIN attempts.
Blocking nurses temporarily.
Urging me to surrender the PIN while Ava was threatened.
He did not admit participating in a plan to physically harm me or Ava before entering the room.
Evidence did not show that.
His messages to Julian:
I’m not letting anyone touch Elara.
Julian:
Nobody is touching her. We need a number.
Then violence happened.
Ethan failed immediately.
That distinction mattered legally.
Emotionally, it barely helped.
He pleaded guilty to attempted financial fraud, coercion conspiracy, theft of the card, and interference with medical personnel.
One more serious child-endangerment charge was reduced because he did not remove Ava or control Beatrice.
He still received custody time.
Shorter than Beatrice.
Longer than he expected.
Probation.
Restitution.
Permanent disqualification from trust-related authority.
No automatic return to Vance Meridian leadership.
Family court separate.
At sentencing he spoke.
“I thought being her husband meant I could solve the problem first and apologize after.”
I looked at him.
That sentence described our marriage more accurately than he knew.
He continued:
“When my mother took Ava, I still spent several seconds thinking Elara should give the PIN. Those seconds are why I am here.”
Yes.
He did not ask me to forgive him.
Good.
Our divorce finalized while he served his sentence.
Property division was ordinary by comparison.
My Cole inheritance stayed separate.
His lawful Vance assets remained his, less restitution.
Marital accounts divided.
The Vance townhouse stayed with the holding company.
I did not want it.
Ava’s trust remained completely outside divorce property.
Ethan retained legal paternity.
Custody would be reviewed later.
Not because money bought rights.
Because parentage and criminal punishment are separate legal questions.
I returned professionally to Elara Cole.
Ava remained Ava Vance.
I considered changing her surname.
Then stopped.
Her father’s surname was hers too.
