Ethan rebuilt a career outside Vance structures.
He became director of compliance at a transportation cooperative.
No family ownership.
Independent board.
He disclosed his conviction permanently.
Some people never trusted him.
Fair.
Others valued that he understood coercive culture from inside.
He refused speaking invitations that framed him as a heroic whistleblower.
“I cooperated after I participated,” he said.
Accurate.
He remarried when Ava was twenty-four.
Her name was Rachel Moore, a school architect.
He told Ava six months before engagement.
Did not ask permission.
Did ask how she wanted introductions handled.
Ava said:
“Slow.”
They went slow.
Rachel never called herself Ava’s stepmother unless Ava did.
She did not.
Their relationship became warm anyway.
I met Rachel once.
Awkward.
Civil.
No competition.
The opposite of Vance family politics.
Ava asked me afterward:
“Jealous?”
“A little.”
“Really?”
“I’m human.”
