Chapter 20 - HELENA MERCER’S FILES

At twenty-one, Ava asked to read my mother’s full files.
Not every privileged document.
Enough.
We sat with Maya, now near retirement.
Ava learned:
Helena Mercer had funded early Vance growth.
Julian had misused authority.
She forced settlement.
She built protections.
Then she hid too much from me.
Ava asked:
“Was Grandma Helena controlling too?”
I inhaled.
“In a different way.”
“She made rules for my life before I existed.”
“Yes.”
“Did they help?”
“Yes.”
“Could they have hurt?”
“Yes.”
Maya looked impressed.
Ava continued:
“So safe people can still overcontrol.”
“Yes.”
That was the lesson I had spent years avoiding.
We simplified the remaining trust again.
At twenty-five, Ava would receive direct control over a large portion.
Before that, she participated in investment education.
Independent counsel.
No family-only adviser.
Ethan attended only if invited.
I attended only if invited.
She chose both of us for one session.
Then neither for the next.
Good.
At twenty-two, she worked at a nonprofit maternity clinic.
People assumed trust money made employment unnecessary.
Ava said:
“So?”
She liked the work.
She later studied healthcare administration.

History influenced her.
It did not own her.
