Chapter 14 - THE DIVORCE DECREE

Our divorce became final when Ava was fourteen months old.

Ethan was still in custody.

The decree gave me primary physical custody.

His future parenting time would be reviewed after release.

No Vance relatives could access Ava through him without court approval.

Financially:

Marital property divided.

My Mercer trust excluded as separate property.

Ethan retained his personal retirement account.

I retained mine.

No alimony.

He agreed to child support after release based on actual income.

No family-company assumptions.

The judge did not punish him through property beyond law.

That mattered to me.

I wanted consequences.

Not revenge disguised as distribution.

After the hearing, I sat in my car and cried for twenty minutes.

Maya found me.

“Regret?”

“No.”

“Grief?”

“Yes.”

I had loved Ethan.

Still did in pieces.

Love after betrayal is humiliating only if you think emotions obey verdicts.

They do not.

What matters is what we do with them.

I visited Ethan once in custody.

Not romantic.

Not reconciliation.

I needed one answer.

“When did you first search my mother’s files?”

“Seven months before Ava was born.”

“Why?”

“Dad asked whether Mercer ever financed Vance.”

“Why didn’t you ask me?”

“I thought if the answer was nothing, I could avoid upsetting you.”

“And if it was something?”

“I thought I’d understand before telling you.”

“There it is.”

“What?”

“You believed understanding gave you the right to decide when I could know.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“That was our marriage before the hospital.”

“Yes.”

I stood.

He said:

“Elara.”

I waited.

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

“I still do.”

“I know.”

“Does that matter?”

“Yes.”

Hope crossed his face.

I stopped it.

“It matters because love wasn’t enough to make you safe.”

He closed his eyes.

I left.

No dramatic goodbye.

A door.

A hallway.

My own steps.

Back home, Ava had learned to walk.

She took four steps toward me and fell laughing.

I sat on the floor.

She climbed into my lap.

No inheritance.

No Vance.

No Mercer.

May you like

Just warm toddler weight.

The world shrank to the right size.
