Chapter 9 - THE SIGNATURE I DID NOT REMEMBER
The signature was mine.
I remembered the conference room after Anna’s funeral.
Robert placing papers in front of me.
Margaret holding Josephine in the hallway.
Clara saying the company needed stability before rumors destroyed Anna’s legacy.
I signed without reading.
Grief explained the condition.
It did not erase the consequence.
The buyback agreement said Anna’s design partnership owned twenty-nine percent of Cole Heritage.
It claimed the shares returned to the company for 180,000 dollars.
The payment never entered Anna’s estate account.
Bank records showed it moved into a custodial account opened for Josephine, then left two days later as a “family debt reimbursement.”
Robert received it.
My signature authorized the sale.
It did not authorize the withdrawal.
The larger problem was the second page.
It stated Anna had amended the partnership before death and reduced her holdings to four percent.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
A document examiner found compression around the signature but could not decide authenticity from the scan.
The original was missing.
If the amendment was genuine, Josephine’s claim was small.
If forged, Robert had taken a controlling family interest for almost nothing.
Silas searched Anna’s former office inventory.
One line listed a sealed prototype transfer to Northlake Trust Company.
Asset description:
MILO MASTER 001 AND ASSOCIATED VOTING INSTRUMENT.
The toy and the shares were connected.
Northlake had merged and changed names twice. Its current successor refused to discuss the account without proof of beneficiary rights.
Mara filed a sealed petition.
Robert’s attorneys argued that the phrase voting instrument referred to toy-testing software, not company shares.
The judge ordered Northlake’s successor to preserve everything.
Clara vanished before her scheduled deposition.
Airport records showed no departure.
Her car was found behind a closed Cole Heritage warehouse.
Inside were the original Christmas card, Anna’s repair-box key, and a handwritten list of payments to Margaret.
No Clara.
Robert accused me of frightening her into hiding.
Silas found a security export showing Clara entering the warehouse voluntarily with Robert.
Only Robert came out.
Police searched the building.
Clara was found locked inside an executive records room.
She was dehydrated but alive.
She said Robert had confined her after she threatened to cooperate.
