Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO DID NOT DISAPPEAR

Emily had not been abducted.

Police found her at her sister’s house the next afternoon.

She said Robert’s lawyer offered her severance money owed from years earlier if she signed the nondisclosure agreement and stopped speaking to me.

“I panicked,” she admitted. “I left the car because I thought you would follow me.”

Her fear did not make her reliable.

Her documents did.

Emily had kept an old project calendar showing Anna scheduled an emergency review of the monkey line twelve days before her death.

The calendar named Robert, Clara, the factory director, and an outside materials supplier.

The review never occurred.

Anna died in a highway collision the night before.

No evidence linked the crash to the company.

I forced myself not to invent a murder because the timing hurt.

Emily explained that the monkey’s detachable head had failed stress tests. Under enough pressure, the neck ring cracked and produced small fragments that could become choking hazards.

Anna ordered production stopped.

Robert continued manufacturing for the holiday season.

Emily believed the master prototype contained a diagnostic recorder inside its torso, but she had never opened it.

“Why would Robert give it to Josephine?”

“He may not have known it was the master.”

“Clara did.”

Emily nodded slowly.

“Clara managed the reject warehouse after Anna died.”

The broken monkey could prove that Anna had preserved design information.

It could also be empty.

We needed the pieces.

The preservation judge ordered Robert to surrender them.

He produced a bag containing shattered plastic.

Silas immediately noticed the foot fragment did not match the one he had saved.

The color was slightly darker.

The scratched label was missing.

Robert claimed cleaners swept everything together.

Mara requested forensic comparison.

Before testing began, Clara reported a burglary at Robert’s mansion.

She claimed someone broke into the study and stole the original fragments.

The security system showed my old access code used at midnight.

I had not entered the property.

Robert gave the log to police and the press.

My father did not need to prove I stole the monkey.

He needed the audit, the break-in, and my angry video to form one public story.

Then Josephine’s school called.

Margaret had arrived asking to collect her.

She carried a notarized letter authorizing temporary grandparent care.

My signature appeared at the bottom.
